A Moment of Empathy on Vanderbilt Drive: Life Design and Sustainable ROI in Action
Today marked my first run in seven months. Since being diagnosed with chronic migraines and had severe anxiety, brought on by unspeakable events occurred in a toxic “W” environment, I had felt paralyzed—unable to engage with the world in the ways I once did. But nature has a way of offering love, empathy, and, most importantly, pragmatic resilience.

On my run along Vanderbilt Drive trail, I encountered a humbling experience that reminded me of the power of empathy and connection. There, lying injured by the side of the road, was a small, native aquatic turtle of Naples, Florida—a being that had just been hit by a car, tragically losing a leg and part of its shell. What followed was a profound lesson in community and the sustainable Return on Investment (ROI) of kindness.
After over an hour of calls and attempts to find help, I crossed paths with Matt Lynch, a retired IBM executive. Despite the grief of losing his mother earlier that same day, Matt didn’t hesitate to help. Together, we brought the injured turtle to the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, a non-profit dedicated to caring for endangered animals. Matt’s selfless compassion, even in his own moment of sorrow, created a ripple effect of healing—a reminder of the true ROI that comes from investing in each other and in our shared environment.

This experience reinforced a fundamental truth about life design and resilience. Every act of kindness and empathy carries a return far beyond the immediate moment. Matt’s actions embodied the essence of inclusivity and impact, saving a life while bringing healing to both of us. For me, it was a powerful reminder that nature, in its quiet way, shows us love and resilience, guiding us toward recovery.

In a world often measured by data, efficiency, and productivity, it’s moments like these that redefine ROI. True return lies in empathy, in connection, and in caring for all living beings as we design a future rooted in kindness and inclusivity. My run today was more than a physical step forward; it was a call to recalibrate our measures of success. The ROI of love, of community, of pragmatic resilience is immeasurable.
To Matt, to the Conservancy, and to the resilient little turtle—thank you for this invaluable lesson. Together, let’s build a world where the ROI of kindness and empathy leads the way.
